In drawing views, a delay has been added to the view update when you are editing the scale. The delay allows you to enter the new scale without the view reacting to each number entered.  You can exclude surfaces from drawing views. In the Drawing View dialog box, on the Recovery Options tab, clear the checkbox on Include Surface Bodies.  In a deferred drawing, you can access Defer Updates from the context menu. The behavior is the same as if you were accessing the option from Document Settings.  You can change the view preview option from the Open dialog. Clear the check on the eyeglasses and the preview is a bounding box. Browser state icon for out of date components. Views with out of date components also get the state icon.    Parameters A Consumed by column is added to the parameters table to make it easy ...

Error installing Revit 2018 - A newer version of Dynamo Add-in for Revit or Dynamo Core is already installed   For those who have installed 2017 software latest updates, especially Dynamo Revit or Dynamo Studio, you may encounter the error listed above when trying to install Revit 2018. The solution is to keep clicking OK until it is done installing. Do not interrupt. It will eventually open up. After launching Revit 2018, check to see if you have the latest version of Dynamo Revit and Dynamo Studio.

To Create a DWG file to Use as a Title Block You can insert any DWG file as a title block, provided that it does not contain any unsupported objects. Use AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, or a different AutoCAD vertical product to create lines, text, images, attribute definitions, and other 2D geometry to generate your title block.  To Insert a DWG File as a Title Block 1. Under Sheet Settings, select Title Block > Insert Title Block.  2.Select the DWG file to insert as a title block.  The DWG inserts into the drawing sheet. For correct placement, make sure the WCS origin point (0,0) in the AutoCAD DWG file is the bottom right corner of your title block.  To Define Attributes in AutoCAD When you create attribute definitions in the DWG file using AutoCAD, those attributes are "picked up" by the Fusion Drawings workspace, meaning if you double-click the title block, you can populate your own title block prompts in the text fields.  1. At the command line in AutoCAD, enter the ATTDEF command. The Attribute Definition dialog box displays.  2.Add a Tag. Tags identify the location of the ...

I have been seeing a plague hitting the AutoCAD world.  A plague of bad Profiles.  How in the world does a Profile go bad?  I am scratching my head on that one.  The symptoms, obviously things are not working right.  VBA routines are not loading or worse yet, they load but then don't work.  Same with the AcadDoc.LSP not loading at all.  Yes, the paths are there in the Support Search path, but they just don't load.  I can type in at the command line, (findfile "acaddoc.lsp") and it returns right where it should be.  I can load it manually, but it won't work automatically.  The out-of-box <<Unnamed Profile>> can't be used to rebuild either.  Believe me, I tried it.  Everything looks fine, but something is amiss somewhere. Easiest thing to do? The easiest fix is run Reset Settings to Default and don't save any custom settings.  Start over on those.  The Reset replaces the <<Unnamed Profile>>, which I recommend then to use Add to List... and add back in the custom folders to the newly created Profile.  Everything seems happy ...

Have you ever wished you had a quick way to show someone who has no access to special software, what you're up to in a CAD drawing, a Revit project file, an Inventor assembly, Civil 3D file, Fusion, Vault, and so on? It could be any need - from an executive who'd like to see how you're progressing, to maybe just your grandma who you want to impress with your latest prowess. But the problem is there's no easy way to do that without them having to install additional software to view it. Well, ever since Autodesk came up with the DWF file format way back in 1995, it was slowly improved upon and got a major boost in 2007 where it became synthesized with Microsoft's Internet Explorer to work natively with that interface. The history of DWF is quite an interesting read in and of itself for us geeks. But with that one little advancement, it made it possible for users of any Autodesk software (software that can export a DWF a.k.a. Drawing Web Format file), to send ...

An issue that I ran across the other day using Inventor 2017 was my part file was acting like it was locked. This issue was not allowing me to edit or delete any features or sketches in my part file. In addition, only a couple of the commands in my ribbon were available and everything else was grayed out. Come to find out this has been an issue since Inventor 2015 and is currently being investigated by Autodesk for a possible cause and resolution. The good news is that there is a workaround which is shown below.     Issue: Features and Sketches unavailable   Workaround:   1.)    Close all documents.       2.)    Invoke the VBA Editor.     3.)    Within the editor under Application Project (Module1) add the following script.   Sub Test()     Dim oDoc As Document     Set oDoc = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument     oDoc.DisabledCommandTypes = 0 End Sub     4.)    Do not close the VBA Editor. Return back to the Inventor user interface and open the document that is locked. Once the document is open go back to the VBA Editor and run the script that was pasted into Module1.      After running the script the ...

The AEC Industry is changing rapidly. Future Buildings will be assembled rather built. This Technology is important to find parts and assemblies within your BIM models.  Design Graph is a new way to explore your 3D data. Autodesk technology uses Shape-based Machine Learning to actually recognize and understand parts, assemblies and entire designs. The Design Graph learns to identify the relationships between all parts within and across all of your designs, irrespective of whether cross-references exist. It learns to interpret your designs in terms of those parts and it provides you a way to navigate your data using: simple text search, learned categories of parts, shape similarity, usage patterns and even smart filters for part numbers, materials and other properties.     Check it out at Autodesk Design Graph https://dg.autodesk.com/#/discover/ Try search for “wall”“basic”“rectangular”“mullion”“base”etc. All 3D models in your A360 Drive account are now available in the Design Graph.

The above image is an example of a common problem for Inventor users.  Though pictured is related to the Inventor Task Scheduler, it could be the same problem for the Project Editor, Inventor View, and other specific apps in the Autodesk / Inventor group.  It isn’t confined to a particular version nor to a specific operating system. It will most typically show up following the installation of Inventor service packs, updates, and hotfixes.  But it has also occurred following Windows Updates and even installation/updates to seemingly unrelated products (screen casting programs for example).  It can also happen if you bounce between two versions of Inventor, for example going from Inventor 2017 to Inventor 2016. The fixes could be one, two or all of the following.  I have ordered the fixes in the order that have offered the most success.  Please note, the following list may well require Admin privileges. 1.       Re-register: a.       Right-click the Windows Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin).  Don’t you just love DOS! b.      Type in (include quotes): cd “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\bin” <Enter> c.       Open the Windows Task Manager, go to ...

BIM 360 Field has been regularly releasing features which you may have missed here are some of the features we felt were most noteworthy.   1.       You can add a pinpoint to issues regardless of what module you are in. Prior to this release you could only add a pin when in the Issues Module and with By Location selected. Now you can add a pin directly from any issue whether it is originated in a checklist, equipment ect.. The one caveat is you need to have the location selected and documents linked to that location prior to placing the pin. a.       The below is an example of an issue generated from a checklist. You will notice there is not a location set.     b.      After the location is set there will be a new button appear on my issue form.    Tap this button and provided you have your drawings linked it will automatically drop the pins on the plan for you.   2.       View the source in which an issue was generated and quickly navigate to that source. For instance in the above example ...

Everyone likes free software. It's even better when that software is actually good. I want tell you about one Autodesk software that I've been using for a long time and really like. It's Autodesk Screencast, Screencast is a desktop recording application that allows you to record your screen and then share it with others. Now I know there are other screen recording applications out there but if you're in Autodesk software user you really should check out Screencast it works fantastic with Autodesk products giving you a button right inside software to start a recording. It records mouse movement, clicks, keystrokes and commands typed at the command line in AutoCAD. This is great for recording tips and tricks to share with coworkers or to illustrate issues for support. Give Autodesk Screencast a try it won't cost you a dime and I think you'll like it.

iLogic (not available in Inventor LT) iLogic Input Field Enhancement The iLogic input field in the InputListBox dialog box now automatically resizes to fit the width of the longest input string. Edit Rule Dialog Box Enhancements Use the new option, Save, to save your work as needed during an editing session without running the rule. The OK button is replaced by Save & Run: This option saves and runs the new or updated rule and closes the dialog box if successfully run. This option is disabled if the form is suppressed. Drawings Reorder Attached Balloons with the New Sort Balloons Context Menu Option (not available in Inventor LT) You can now reorder attached balloons by their value. First, attach balloons using the Attach Balloon From List context menu option. Then, after closing the Attach Balloon dialog box, right-click on the balloon stack and select Sort Balloons. Values are automatically reordered. Numeric attached balloons are reordered from smallest to largest. Alpha attached balloons are reordered from ...

General Improvements to Measure Command Precision Visual enhancement: A check mark  now displays next to the default Measure Distance, Angle, Loop, and AreaPrecision value when you access the list for the first time in a file. Previously the check mark only displayed after you made a selection.  Inventor 2017: The checked  measure precision value now persists across sessions in all files. Select a different measure precision value to change the default measure precision value. Previously when you changed the Precision value in existing files, the change was not maintained after saving, closing, and reopening the file.    Important: When you create a new template file in any new version of Inventor (for example Inventor 2017 R2, R3, 2018, and onward) the default measure precision value must be set in both Document Settings Units tab Modeling Dimension Display fields and in the Measure Precision value dialog box.    Enhancements to Projects dialog box (not available in Inventor LT) Access to the Configure Library dialog box has been simplified from two clicks to one click. The drop-down button with only one entry has been ...

“Use the Force, Luke” The following is a few tips and tricks I introduce to AutoCAD users during training sessions.  There is mistaken belief out there that if you use AutoCAD then you know how to use AutoCAD.  Sounds like an obvious sequitur but often users of AutoCAD are too busy working to actually learn how to use AutoCAD effectively. The best place to start is with the Graphical User Interface or GUI pronounce ‘gooey’.  Sometimes just exploring the GUI you will discover commands and features that you didn’t know AutoCAD even had.  So, let’s setup and streamline the AutoCAD GUI for productivity. Where to begin?  For most, the biggest change to the GUI was the introduction of the Ribbon back in AutoCAD 2009.  Immediately, users cried, “Give us back the Classic”.  My response, “Get over it, the Ribbon is here to stay.”  Launch your AutoCAD and follow along. Review the image below and note that I am using AutoCAD 2017 and I have the Workspace: Drafting and Annotation active.  Since we aren’t actually going to be drawing, I have the drawing area ...

With the new Copy Design within Vault Pro 2017 iLogic rules are NOT COPIED by default. This can be resolved by setting up a new Action Rule. Below I have listed the steps on how to make sure your iLogic rules get copied with your parts and assemblies. Step 1: Within the Copy Design dialogue click on the Master Menu and select Action Rules.     Step 2: Within the Action Rules dialogue you will notice that we have a Default Rule Set. Select the Default Rule Set and then select Copy. You can either keep the Rule Name given or you can give the rule a more meaningful name. Click OK.     Step 3: You will now notice that within the Action Rules Dialogue we have a Copy of Default Rule Set. Select this new rule and select edit.   Step 4: Within the Define Rule Set dialogue select iLogicRuleStatus underneath Property Behavior and then click on Remove. Click OK.   Step 5:  Click Apply and OK within the Action Rules dialogue.   Step 6: Within the Copy Design Dialogue click on Selected Rule Set and choose the newly created rule. This will allow your iLogic ...

In addition to Revit family parameters, project parameters and shared parameters, Autodesk added Global Parameters as part of 2016 R2. Global Parameters are specific to a single project file, but are not assigned to categories. Global parameters can be simple values, values derived from equations, or values taken from the model using other global parameters. Use global parameters to drive and report values. A global parameter can assign the same value to multiple non-adjacent dimensions. You can also set the position of one element by the size of another element. If you missed it, join us for this special parametric design session on Global Parameters to learn more.

Released exclusively to Subscription customers, Autodesk Revit 2016 R2 builds on the speed and project performance improvements. Revit 2016 R2 has over 25 new features, many which were requested by users. This update makes Revit faster with even better performance that translates to faster navigation, speedier work processes. If you missed this webinar, we will show you the significant updates that relate to the Architectural Industry.

A new enhancement within Autodesk Inventor 2017 is being able to export a 3D PDF, which is another great way for collaborating with others in the day-to-day design process. Check out the video and link below to start utilizing this new feature.   Inventor 3D PDF's Video Additional Information on exporting 3D PDF's

I read an article a few days ago that blew my mind. It turns out that Microsoft's "Bing" search engine has fallen to 5th place among internet search engines - which begged the question, "who's in the top 5?" Predictably, Google was first, followed by China's Baidu (volume, of course), then Yahoo, and in 4th place? Drum roll, please.....Yandex. Ponder that for a moment, as the tumbleweeds silently blow across your mind. Granted, I'd never heard of Baidu either, but the reason that Russia's Yandex search engine has surpassed Bing isn't necessarily because it's better, or because there are more Russian speaking people than English. It's quite the opposite - to the casual observer (me in this case) Yandex doesn't "pop", or provide better information than Bing. To test my theory, I did a simple search on both engines using keywords "Atlanta Braves", and Bing was far superior in content, style, and the general layout. While reading the article, I started thinking, "poor Microsoft - first the Zune, now Bing". Remember the Zune? Microsoft's answer to the iPod? By all comparisons (sales, functionality, ...

I continue to be amazed at the speed and quality of information that is out there in relation to Autodesk. Whether it's a new release from Autodesk Labs, a YouTube video on using Inventor's Frame Generator, or a podcasted Autodesk University class (complete with downloadable PDF syllabi), you can learn so much, yet feel so overwhelmed. Lately, Twitter has proven to be the most accessible (and controllable) stream of data I've found for tracking new technology and trends within the Autodesk family. You pick and choose who you subscribe to, and as a hybrid Autodesk Manufacturing and Plant news junkie, here are a few Tweeters I'd recommend following - Autodesk Labs Scott (@scottsh115 ) - Scott Sheppard is the Program Manager for Autodesk Labs, and when new technology is hatched in the lab, he's the first to announce it. Autodesk Inventor (@InventorTips) - chock full of tips, tricks and news related to Inventor. AutoCAD Exchange (@ACADExchange) - features an "AutoCAD Expert of The Week" and requests questions for them to answer. There's also an AutoCADPlantExchange (@PlantExchange) twitter page with ...
