Autodesk recently introduced some new functionality to Manage Revit Models in the Cloud, including BIM 360 Team 'Compare Versions'. I ran into a nasty issue with a customer the other day while helping them get set up on BIM 360 Team and A360 Collaboration for Revit. Once I had them set up, they began initiating collaboration on several Revit projects. Initially all seemed to go well, until they started opening up the recently uploaded files. In every single file, once they opened it in Revit 2017 (as well as Revit 2017.2), the first thing they clicked on in the file (whether an element, a view,  or a ribbon) resulted in a irrecoverable error and Revit would crash.  Google is your friend. I quickly found a thread on the Autodesk Revit Forum where it was explained that this has been recently identified as a problem for some people, but not all. In fact, this was the first time I had seen it. Autodesk does not have a fix for it yet, however, there is a temporary workaround until they do - it involves disabling Communicator.  If you are experiencing frequent irrecoverable errors when working on A360 Collaboration for Revit files, follow these ...

This gives you an immediate view of all the cloud services. www.health.autodesk.com If you are experiencing any issues with cloud based services the FIRST place to check is this website. It monitors all of Autodesk's servers and if there is ANY issues with cloud services you can see if they are running 'Normally", 'Degraded" or "Not in Service". If you want you can be notified automatically via an email click on "Health Subscription" in the top right corner.  Autodesk will email you if there is something wrong with any of their services in which you are subscribed to receive notifications. He leads the practice’s research into sustainable design and the use of new materials and methods in construction, and established the Material Research Centre (MRC). He is also responsible for the Specialist Modelling Group (SMG), a multi-disciplinary research team who are experts in all aspects of environmental analysis, computational design, architecture for the senses, and digital fabrication.  He has worked on a number of projects that have pioneered new techniques for energy efficiency and resource management, including the Reichstag, New German Parliament in Berlin, the McLaren Technology Centre, London City Hall, the carbon-neutral settlement, Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, and his team is working on lunar and Mars projects. Currently he is involved in Apple’s new Headquarters in California. Autodesk A360 Collaboration for Revit was released in January of 2015, and since then has seen a steadily increasing rate of adoption among users who need to host a Revit Central File in the cloud in order to collaborate with other firms and organizations, or even to collaborate within the same firm between geographically disperse offices. As would be expected, as the adoption rate increases, we have also seen an increase in support cases related to A360 - mostly involving the initial setup and confusion as to the relationship between A360 Collaboration for Revit and A360 Team.  We have recently completed a white paper to explain how these two services work together, how to set them up and the basics of working in A360 Collaboration for Revit. I must admit that I borrowed part of this post's title from the April issue of Product Design and Development, but the title made perfect sense to me, especially in light of the numerous issues that Boeing is having with the Dreamliner 787.Specifically, the Dreamliner's lithium-ion batteries had been shown in rare circumstances to catch fire. Though I'm sure a degree of thermal testing was probably done prior to manufacturing of the batteries, the recent problems encountered by Boeing point out the importance of virtual testing, and doing so earlier in the design process. The FAA has just recently lifted a 3 month ban on Dreamliner flights, and Boeing has stationed 300 workers on 10 teams around the world to do the work of replacing the defective units with a revamped battery system that's better insulated against a short circuit. So let's do some math here - it's said that it will take about five days to install the revamped lithium-ion battery system on each plane, so 5 days of rework with 300 workers salaries at double the minimum wage would be ...

There was a time when I can remember preparing for a meeting or even going to the plant to discuss design and engineering issues with multiple detailed drawings in my hands and needing someone to aid me in opening doors. However, with today's technology, the burden of lugging around loads of documentation is becoming a thing of the past. With more and more people starting to make the move to mobile devices and discovering the vast world of apps available, I would like to point out one specifically which allows you to view, markup, and annotate 2D and 3D DWF files from your Autodesk Cloud account. It is the Design Review mobile app by Autodesk, Inc. and it is available for the following devices: iPhone 3GS or higher, iPad 1 or 2, iPod Touch 3rd generation or higher, with a minimum operating system of the Apple iOS 3.2. Every company, whether manufacturing a product, designing a building or providing a service (IT, consulting, etc.) has a concept, a plan, process or design reviews, and procedures related to the startup, production, management and pass-off or completion of their product, building or service. And all aspects of that lifecycle ideally should be documented and accessible (at various permission levels) throughout the entire organization.Some of the traditional objections to implementing PLM have been the massive infrastructure and investment in costly programming needed to link disparate and non-communicative technologies. Try connecting Vaulted Inventor assembly data to an ERP system based on a "home grown" AS400 platform for example...it works about as well as Monty Python's Hungarian at the Tobacconist using an English phrase book. And if you don't know how that sketch ended, look it up on YouTube - not pretty!This is where Autodesk 360 Nexus appears to have an ingenious way of clearing the hurdle mentioned above - by keeping the data inside the firewall and providing a Cloud based, zero infrastructure investment model whereby anyone collaborating or doing business ...

In a continuation from a previous blog post on the Cloud... There is also something in the Autodesk Cloud called “Documents”.This, as the name might simply imply, is a place in the cloud to store files, documents, images, etc. and be able to manage and share them with team members, colleagues and clients. Folders and categories can be created; files can be edited via AutoCAD WS, along with mobile app. to view on iPad or iPhone devices. Within Documents the files can be shared to other users with rights assigned to the files controlling the access. Also recent activity can be tracked along with comments that can be left by users about the files. There are even Versions of the file that can be tracked. See image below for document details.One other comment to add is that Autodesk was offering potential, non-subscription, users to signup and get 1 gig for free!
