10 Steps to a Fantastic Voyage Inside Your Revit Designs

1 October 2018All, Architecture and Engineering

In the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage, a submarine crew shrinks to microscopic size to travel inside a human body. With Revit 2019, you can travel inside your designs to really experience the world you are creating. Jump inside Revit 2019 and actually design in 3D! For previous blog posts, see 8 Things Even Your Dog Would Love About Revit 2019 and 8 Things Your Cat Couldn’t Care Less About in Revit 2019.

New Revit includes features that make it easier to create geometry and work in 3D views. With new Levels in 3D views you can display and edit levels in any view, ortho or perspective – no need to switch back and forth from 2D. What else might propel your submarine?

  1. Structural now has a Steel tab at the top. Connections tabs all have a drop down dialog box for preloaded steel connections. You can filter out connection groups you’d like to bring in. There are a lot of connection options, and you can add or remove them as you want. Here’s a little trick – click on the connection option, set the option current, then pick where you want it placed and finalize the connection.
  2. To see the actual connection instead of a symbol, set the detail level and select fine detail level. You can adjust anchors for instance, but you need to modify parameters one connection at time. You cannot match properties or use copy/paste when configuring multiple parts, for instance anchor bolts. And you cannot set the detail by selecting multiple parts at the same time. But, just like nanobot submarines, it’s on the horizon.
  3. You have a bunch of new structure options for parametric cuts, connections, steel options, fabrication elements, and modifiers. Because you can be inside the design and up close in 3D, you can make some decent looking connections with structure in this latest version.
  4. For the MEP side, there are piping enhancements for piping networks, for complex piping networks in parallel, pump networks, and adding separators in your flow calculations. There’s a neat enhancement for fabrication settings. For fab in Revit, under fabrication settings, notice that in the settings dialogs, the icons have changed to a more modern look.
  5. There’s a tab under services now that lets you add unloaded parts or additional parts to your services. Services like routing solutions have improved quite a bit. Routing fill is a lot better. The parts come in better. If you have parts that aren’t in the database, you can import parts into your projects instead of having to figure out how to add them manually. This will be a fantastic, time-saving feature of your design journey. [If you’re curious, parts fabrication pulls from the same folder in AutoCAD as AutoCAD Fabrication.] There is a configuration that will pull from Autodesk fabrication databases. Revit out of the box pulls from a different location [to see where that is, Google “Revit fab parts location.” It may be in a hidden user file location].
  6. For piping and plumbing, there is a new hydraulic separation option to add separation to your systems. When you have a secondary or tertiary loop, you can select at the beginning or end of a complex system and add separation so your calculations are a little more accurate. Accuracy is key. Calculations under hydronic networks are improved as well. There is an Enable Analysis option now.
  7. There are text justification improvements, although none yet for inserting text. There are also vertical text alignment improvements. Every step forward like this makes for a better client experience.
  8. I’ll bet the new free form rebar shape matching is making you smile already. Wait till you work with it!
  9. There is now automation for precast lattice girder slabs with rules and workflows similar to other types of precast elements in the Structural Precast Extension for Revit.
  10. The API (Application Programming Interface) for precast automation enables thousands of possible customizations and improvements required to support the precast industry. Imagine being inside a piece of precast concrete before it’s even poured.

The enhanced fabrication options in Revit 2019 will allow you to increase detail and accuracy. Not only do the improvements allow you to immerse yourself in your designs, your clients can better share the creative journey. As the enhancements in Revit 2019 allow you to experience your project from the inside out, you’ll discover ways you can make your designs even better. It will be a Fantastic Voyage!
